Volkswagen scrapping plans to bring new sedan to America as drivers moan ‘the US just can’t have nice things’ ...Middle East

VOLKSWAGEN have scrapped plans to release a luxury sedan to the US market.

The German marque had previously planned to launch the stylish ID.7 model in North America last year – before announcing in May 2024 that it would be delayed.

But now, it’s been confirmed that the EV’s launch has been completely cancelled.

The all-electric family sedan, which is already sold in China and Europe, was originally revealed in 2023 with plans to build it in Germany and begin its North American sales the following year.

But while it was released in Europe without any problems, things seemed to become more complicated when it came to the North American market.

In May 2024, VW announced an indefinite delay “as market dynamics continue to change.”

To give that a little more context, Automotive News reported that a VW spokesperson cited “ongoing challenging EV climate” as the reason for the decision.

Expected to be priced between $50,000 and $60,000, VW dealers across the US reportedly expressed concerns that the ID.7 would be a hard sell.

However, the model warrants strong demand in both the Chinese and European markets.

Gearheads in the US are seemingly disappointed by the news, with a number taking to social media to air their dismay.

One wrote: “The US just can’t have nice things.”

And another said: “I was considering replacing my GTI with one of those.”

Last year, Sun Motors road-tested the ID.7 pro Match in Europe, with editor Rob Gill describing it as “roomy, comfy and efficient with a kit list as long as your arm,” although he criticized its price.

The general consensus seems to be that the ID.7 is one of Volkswagen‘s best electric vehicles to date.

This latest news comes during a tumultuous time for VW.

Last October, it was announced that the German giants, who also owns the likes of Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, MAN, and others, will shut at least three of its factories in its homeland and lay off tens of thousands of staff.

The car-making giants will also shrink their remaining plants and cut staff pay by 10% in a deeper-than-expected overhaul of one of the world’s most recognizable brands.

In recent times, VW has faced tough competition from Chinese manufacturers, as well as weak sales and a slow expansion into the electric vehicle sector.

This comes as Nissan’s luxury brand Infiniti is planning to get rid of two crossovers by the end of the year and, in return, launch two brand-new models.

The car company will stop producing the QX50, its second-best-selling car in 2024, in December 2025.

The same goes for a similar model, the QX55, which will also be discontinued.

Both models have been fan favorites — but not without some complaints
