WARREN — Superintendent Steve Chiaro announced plans for a groundbreaking mobile STEM lab during a recent Warren Board of Education meeting.

The addition of the mobile lab is part of the district’s efforts to enhance science, technology, engineering and mathematics education for students. The 38-foot mobile lab, which is under construction in Reynoldsburg, is designed to function as a fully equipped classroom on wheels.

The lab will rotate among the district’s schools, spending one week at each location to provide hands-on STEM experiences for students. The initiative aims to bring cutting-edge resources directly to students, regardless of which school they attend.

“This is consistent with the vision of where we want things to go within the district,” Chiaro said. “I don’t know another district that has a resource such as this.”

The mobile STEM lab will accommodate approximately half a classroom of students at a time, allowing for a rotating schedule with one group working in the lab while the other remains in the classroom. A dedicated teacher will be hired to oversee the lab and coordinate with building staff to align activities with the district’s curriculum.

Chiaro said the district is committed to expanding STEM opportunities, noting that the mobile lab is a cost-effective alternative to building multiple STEM labs across the district.

“Instead of creating four STEM labs in four buildings, we invested in a mobile STEM lab to try to work in this direction,” he said.

The project is funded through a combination of federal American Rescue Plan dollars and Title I funds. While Chiaro did not specify the exact cost, he confirmed that the investment reflects the district’s priority of providing innovative learning opportunities for students.

The mobile lab is expected to be operational by the start of the 2025-26 school year. District officials, including Chiaro, Technology Director Danielle Miller and Director of Operations John Lacy, recently visited the manufacturing site in Reynoldsburg to finalize design details and oversee progress.

“We’re very excited about it,” Chiaro said. “This is going to be expanding our STEM offerings for our students.”

The announcement comes as Warren City Schools continues to celebrate academic achievements and community engagement efforts. Chiaro highlighted recent successes, including Warren G. Harding High School’s second-place finish in the Trumbull County Academic Challenge over the weekend and a well-attended community event focused on improving student attendance.

The mobile STEM lab represents a new chapter in the district’s efforts to prepare students for the future.

“Our goal is to keep advancing,” Chiaro said. “This is just the beginning.”
