During the coffee chain’s earnings call on Tuesday, Jan. 28, CEO Brian Niccol announced a “roughly 30% reduction in both beverages and food." However, the chain has yet to announce which items are getting cut.
“While we’re only one quarter into our turnaround, we’re moving quickly to act on the ‘Back to Starbucks’ efforts and we’ve seen a positive response,” Niccol said in a press release. “We believe this is the fundamental change in strategy needed to solve our underlying issues, restore confidence in our brand and return the business to sustainable, long-term growth" he continued.
"That opens the door for better innovation that will hopefully resonate even more so for our customers," the executive continued.
The announcement follows a series of recent changes, including the return of free refills for customers who drink their orders in-store using ceramic mugs, glasses, or clean personal cups from home. (Only hot or iced brewed coffee or tea is available for refills; the offer does not apply to specialty drinks.)
Earlier this month, the company implemented a controversial update to its code of conduct for employees and customers, walking back the "open-door" policy which allowed non-paying customers to sit inside the store and use the restrooms.
