Bears Rounding Out Staff, Pick Your Poison, Soldier Field Reunions on Deck, and Other Wednesday Bullets ...Middle East

Day 24 of the Chicago Bears offseason. My friend (and former Tribune colleague) Chris Hine has an Anthony Edwards biography coming out soon that you can pre-order on Amazon. I don’t do New Year’s Resolutions. But one thing I told myself I’d like to do more in 2025 is support my friends’ endeavors with my wallet when I can whether that is with donations or purchases. Here’s hoping I can do more in 2025.

It has been one week since the Bears held their introductory press conference for new head coach Ben Johnson. How are you feeling about the move now that you’ve had a week to let it settle in? I still feel good about it, but I’ll wait to expand on my thoughts until after the entire coaching staff is announced. In case you missed it, the Bears made it officially official with their coordinators on Tuesday. Dennis Allen will run the defense, Declan Doyle snags the OC title, and Richard Hightower remains in his post as the coordinator of the special teams unit. I’m digging the optimism fans have been sharing regarding the OC and DC hires. Folks seem indifferent (at best) and disappointed (at worst) regarding the special teams coordinator gig going back to someone from the old regime. But the way I see it, Ben Johnson can turn around and find a new special teams coach next offseason if he doesn’t like what that unit looks like in Year 1. If you’re curious about Bears assistants with head coaching experience in the past, just know that this team does have a recent history in that department. Dennis Allen (a two-time former head coach) joins the likes of Chuck Pagano (who worked for Matt Nagy in 2019 and 2020 as the Bears’ defensive coordinator after Vic Fangio’s departure), Rod Marinelli (who served under Lovie Smith from 2010-12), and Mike Martz (who was also here at the tail end of the Lovie years and ran the offense in 2010 and 2011). OK, so these weren’t the greatest head coaches, but it is what it is. Tired: Thinking about Ben Johnson staffing a coach’s room with former head coaches. Inspired: Thinking about which coaches Ben Johnson will hire who will grow into head coach candidates in the future. Would you rather have a staff full of former head coaches or future head coaches? With more than $60 million in cap space available under the cap, the Bears should spare no expense when it comes to upgrading their offensive line this offseason. I am tired of writing about missed opportunities to get it right in the trenches. It is put up or shut up time for GM Ryan Poles. So, with that being said, I hope you read what I wrote about the potential cost of doing business to add (at least) two starting guards and a new center to the mix. © Michael Chow/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The Bears will see the return of Matt Eberflus (Cowboys defensive coordinator) and Luke Getsy (Packers senior offensive assistant) next year. But Jason Lieser (Sun-Times) also points out the Bears could see the return of Justin Fields to Soldier Field. If we are living on the timeline in which Fields re-signs with the Steelers, we could see Chicago’s former QB1 square off against Caleb Williams. What a fun time that will be for folks! Chicago’s road show could be fun, too. You’re looking at matchups against Washington (Caleb-Jayden II), Baltimore (Caleb vs. Lamar), and Vegas (Ben Johnson vs. Pete Carroll). With that in mind, I fully expect the Bears to be in prime viewing windows a bunch in 2025 — for better or worse. Patriots QB Drake Maye gets the Pro Bowl nod (h/t ESPN) after securing just one win as a starter — and of course it came against the Bears. Surely, Maye and Jayden Daniels getting Pro Bowl recognition while Caleb Williams doesn’t isn’t something that will be a point of discussion this offseason for talking heads who have no idea how to otherwise create a conversation. ? I don’t know what the Saints will do with their head coach hire, but it won’t be Mike McCarthy. The former Packers and Cowboys head coach has bowed out from the running in New Orleans. McCarthy could be a highly sought-after candidate in next year’s hiring cycle after sitting out for a year. It feels like a timely occasion to re-share this:
