JSW Soorma Hockey Club claimed a thrilling 5-3 victory against Vedanta Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League 2024-25 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium on Monday. This win was vital for Soorma as they aim for a spot in the playoffs. In the first match of the day, Bengal Tigers reclaimed the top spot with a narrow 2-1 victory over Delhi SG Pipers, who are reeling at the bottom of the table.

JSW Soorma vs Kalinga Lancers

The match kicked off with the Lancers taking an early lead when Dilpreet Singh found the back of the net in the fifth minute. However, Prabhjot Singh brought Soorma back into the game with an equalizer in the 26th minute, setting the stage for an exciting showdown. The third quarter was dominated by Soorma, who scored three goals: Harmanpreet Singh netted two (32′, 54′) and Nicolas Keenan added another (33′), pushing their lead to 4-2. Although Theirry Brinkman scored for the Lancers in the 44th minute, Soorma held firm.

Maninder Singh extended Soorma’s lead with a goal in the 51st minute, making it 5-2. Gursahibjit Singh managed to score for the Lancers in the closing minutes (56′), but it was too late to alter the result.

Game Dynamics

Soorma started the match with strong offensive pressure, quickly advancing into the Lancers’ territory. The Lancers had their first real opportunity when Sanjay sent a cross that forced goalkeeper Vincent Vanasch to make an early save. Dilpreet’s goal came shortly after, demonstrating his ability to navigate through defenders.

As the first quarter ended with the Lancers ahead 1-0, they continued to press in the second quarter. However, Soorma gradually found their footing and began to break through the Lancers’ defence more effectively.

With just four minutes remaining in the second quarter, Harmanpreet delivered a precise pass to Prabhjot, who skillfully redirected it past goalkeeper Toby Cotterill, levelling the score at 1-1. The half ended with both teams unable to convert their penalty corner chances.

Third Quarter Surge

The third quarter marked a turning point for Soorma. They earned a penalty corner early on, and Harmanpreet’s powerful flick put them ahead. Moments later, he assisted Nicolas Keenan, who scored with a reverse shot. Despite Theirry Brinkman’s goal for the Lancers late in the quarter, Soorma maintained their momentum. In the final quarter, Soorma continued their offensive strategy. After Maninder’s goal made it 5-2, Gursahibjit’s late effort highlighted the Lancers’ determination but ultimately fell short.
