SC Freiburg will host the league leaders Bayern Munich on Matchday 19 of the Bundesliga season.

The Breisgau Brazilians sit 8th in the Bundesliga with 27 points from 18 matches. They are just one point outside of the European places.

Julian Schuster is the head coach of Freiburg. Overall, Schuster is doing a good job. But this is his first full season in the hot seat. And after some poor results in recent weeks, Schuster’s managerial credentials look set to be put to the test.

Things are going well at the Europa-Park Stadium. At home, the Breisgau Brazilians have won six from eight, losing one and drawing the other. On the road, things aren’t as good. Freiburg have lost six, drawn two and won two.

And it’s this poor away form that is causing Schuster the problems.

Three of the Breisgau Brazilians previous four matches have been on the road. They have lost all three to an aggregate score of 13-2.

There was a 3-2 home win over Holstein Kiel on Matchday 16. But even in victory, Schuster’s team managed to concede two goals against one of the poorest teams in the Bundesliga.

If the defensive gaps aren’t plugged soon, Schuster’s team are likely to start plummeting down the table.

Freiburg are not likely to be shown any mercy against Bayern. The Bavarians have just suffered a 3-0 defeat to Feyenoord in the Champions League – a defeat that has all but condemned Bayern to the two legged play-offs.

Bayern’s loss does need to be put into some perspective. Kompany’s team had 80% of the possession and 30 shots. Most other days, the result is flipped.

The defeat will have hurt. And when Bayern are hurting, the chances are someone is likely to pay.

For all Bayern’s struggles in Europe, they are going well domestically. Vincent Kompany’s team sit at the top of the Bundesliga table with 45 points from 18 matches. The points haul is Bayern’s best at this stage of a campaign since the 2016/17 season.

Despite this, the Bavarians are now only four points clear at the top of the table.

The defending champions, Bayer Leverkusen, looked out of the title race earlier in the season. But they have really hit their stride in recent weeks, winning eight successive Bundesliga matches.

Xabi Alonso’s team is putting Munich under pressure. So far, the Bavarians are holding firm. But with just a four-point gap at the top of the table, Bayern can’t afford any slips.

For their part, Bayern has won their last four in the Bundesliga.

Two of the four matches were convincing home wins over RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim. But Munich were made to work for their 1-0 win away at Monchengladbach on Matchday 16. And just last Saturday, they had to ride out some late nervy minutes to secure a 3-2 win over Wolfsburg.

Vincent Kompany’s team may be clear at the top for now. But their lead is fragile. And with Leverkusen showing little sign of easing off, Munich need to keep on producing the goods.
