Justis Huni’s manager Mick Francis has confirmed they will officially appeal his KO defeat to Fabio Wardley.

Huni stepped in at just five weeks notice to face British heavyweight Wardley for the WBA interim heavyweight world title at Ipswich’s Portman Road.

The Aussie had put up a sensational performance and was ahead on the judges’ scorecards going into the tenth round.

His dominance all came undone however as he fell into a trap, and was nailed to the canvas by a ferocious right hand from power-punching Wardley.

It left him flat on his back but he was able to recover and climb to his feet before being counted by referee John Latham.

The official hadn’t quite reached the count of ten before making the decision to wave off the contest, with Huni uneasy on his feet.

But it was a result that wasn’t widely appreciated by many of Huni’s camp, despite the fighter himself’s assessment that he was undone by a moment of magic.

Huni’s manager Francis insisted he will lodge a formal complaint with the WBA in due course.

He said in a furious rant: “He just waved it off. I’m lodging a protest with the WBA.

“I’ve already spoken to Eddie Hearn and Spencer (Brown) and they agreed.

“It’s a f***ing world title, not some fight in the park. And they didn’t give Justis Huni the correct opportunity.”

Francis additionally suggested that Huni had not been given fair time to fully recover from the shot.

And he believes it was a premature stoppage which ultimately handed him the maiden defeat of his professional career.

Huni’s stocks rose nonetheless in defeat, with the dominant display without a full camp seen as brilliance by the boxing fraternity.

But for Wardley, it was a career-best moment of genius which sent the Norfolk venue into raptures.

It was a key moment of victory in the jaws of defeat, and he will likely now look to push forward into world title contention.

And promoter Frank Warren insists Wardley will now be well in the mix for a world title shot, once the future of the division is resolved after Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois rematch on July 19.

He said: “Eat your heart out Deontay Wilder, that was a Deontay Wilder moment.

“He’s got a big heart, he’s a powerful man and again, he stopped another one.

“I’ve got to take my hat off to Justis Huni, they both boxed very well.

“After that fight, it will settle the heavyweight division now to know who will be the mandatories.

“He is there. He’s going to take a bit of time out now. Let the dust settle.

“He’s in the position and he’s done that through sheer grit.”
