Updates on Highway 1 projects along Mendocino Coast ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

The full closures of the Jack Peters Creek Bridge near Mendocino last week allowed for considerable progress to be made on the project, the California Department of Transportation reported.

According to Caltrans, the recent overnight closures of the span “allowed a crane on the bridge to install falsework for the new bridge section, (and the project will now) continue with falsework placement and ground anchor installation. After completing the falsework, crews will install formwork for the upper structure of the bridge.”

As the work proceeds, Caltrans advises that “motorists should expect 10-minute delays, 24-hours a day, until the project’s anticipated completion in Fall 2025.”

More details about the Jack Peters Creek Bridge Widening and Rail Upgrade Project provided by Caltrans:

Location: Route 1 near of the town of Mendocino Purpose: to bring Jack Peters Creek Bridge up to current design standards by widening the existing structure and upgrading bridge rails. Results: Widening the bridge to accommodate two 12-foot wide lanes, two 6-foot-wide shoulders and a 6-foot wide separated pedestrian walkway on the west side of the widened structure that will link the segment of the California Coastal Trail from County Road 5000 to Lansing Drive. Cost: $15.5 million.

Another ongoing Caltrans project along Highway 1 is called the “Westport Landslide Complex, located on the Mendocino County coast approximately 1.3 miles south of the community of Westport. The width of the landslide at the roadway elevation is approximately 1,400 feet. In addition to the large, deep-seated landslide, there is also a series of nested landslides that encroach on the roadway from below, triggered by wave action and erosion along the coastline.”

Given that the area has “a long history of movement, resulting in damage to the roadway prism and sometimes long-term lane closures while emergency repairs are undertaken,” Caltrans explains that “without additional stabilization measures, future storm events are expected to contribute to additional roadway loss (to a) Minor Arterial route that provides mobility and access to the cities and unincorporated communities along the Mendocino coast.”

Following the winter storms of 2022/23, Caltrans notes that “a Director’s Order was issued for $30 million of repairs. The scope of this project includes geotechnical investigation and monitoring, extension of the existing northern soldier pile ground anchor (SPGA) wall, and, if feasible, placement of rock revetment at the toe of the slope. Based on results of the geotechnical monitoring, future work may include installation of a subsurface drainage system (to slow landslide movement) and additional retaining structures.” The work is expected to continue through December of 2025.
