It's been a two year wait, but finally medical thriller series Malpractice is almost back on ITV1 - although it will look quite different than the show's first season. Since the arrival of season 1, which starred Niamh Algar as an A&E doctor under investigation, the show has now become an anthology, with the only returning characters being medical investigators Norma and George, as played by Helen Behan and Jordan Kouamé. New cast this time around include Tom Hughes as Dr James Ford, a psychiatrist who becomes the subject of this season's investigation. Meanwhile, Selin Hizli and Zoë Telford play key supporting characters. Malpractice once again comes from doctor-turned-writer Grace Ofori-Attah, who was also recently behind Playing Nice, but what is the new season about, who else is in the cast and when will fans be able to watch it? Read on for everything you need to know about Malpractice season 2. Will there be a second season of Malpractice? There will! It was confirmed in December 2023 that Malpractice would be returning and that it would be taking on an anthology format, only bringing back the medical investigators and not any of the other key cast members, such as Niamh Algar. Ofori-Attah explained this decision when speaking with RadioTimes.com, saying: "I think Niamh, she's such a star, it would be hard to bring her back as a sort of background character, and to do another story focused on her would be difficult if it's still a medical malpractice thing, because we sort of dealt with her malpractice. "So, yeah, easier I think to look at a different area and different central doctor." When will Malpractice season 2 be released? The second season of Malpractice will be released on ITV1 and ITVX on Sunday 4th May, airing at 9pm. This means it will be arriving around two years after the first season. What will Malpractice season 2 be about? The official synopsis for Malpractice season 2 says: "When on-call psychiatric registrar Dr James Ford (Tom Hughes) finds himself caught between an anxious new mother’s postnatal check-up and the sectioning of a psychotic patient, no one could predict the tragic outcome. "Norma Callahan and George Adjei of the MIU are called in to investigate Dr Ford’s actions. His personal life is messy and his colleagues may find him arrogant, but Dr Ford appears committed to his vulnerable patients. "Yet what appears to be a series of bad choices by one doctor spreads beyond the psychiatric unit to a hospital seemingly at war with itself. Is Dr Ford a doctor with a God complex, or a victim himself? "With the investigation closing in, can Dr Ford save his already fragile career from a string of apparently damning mistakes? And can the MIU uncover the truth of what happened despite fierce opposition from all sides?" Malpractice cast – who will be back and who is joining for season 2? While season 1 stars Jordan Kouamé and Helen Behan will be returning as members of the Medical Investigation Unit, the new season will mostly feature a new cast, as it tackles a new case of medical Malpractice. Taking the lead in the new season will be Those About to Die's Tom Hughes, Am I Being Unreasonable's Selin Hizli and Sherlock's Zoë Telford, while Hannah McClean (Blue Lights), Seraphina Beh (Top Boy), Rick Warden (The Jetty) and Ace Bhatti (Line of Duty) will be taking on supporting roles. Hughes said of joining the show: "I couldn't be more delighted to be playing James and helping bring to life Grace's pertinent and important piece [of writing], which stopped me in my tracks when I read it. I hope the audience, when they see it, are equally as gripped and engaged by it, as I was."
