The actress's role in Lynch's 1986 film Blue Velvet helped her career skyrocket, and the two dated for approximately five years after the fact, breaking up not long after she was featured in his 1990 film Wild at Heart.
Despite ending their romantic relationship, the two remained close friends, with Rossellini posting a recent photo of the two sitting with their heads leaned against one another and Lynch's arm wrapped around her shoulder while the two held hands as she mourned his passing.

“It would be very bad for me to get sick, even with a cold,” he told Sight & Sound at the time.
“He clearly saw something in me that even I didn’t recognize,” he wrote in his lengthy tribute. “I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision.”
