CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A Charlotte mall plagued with problems over the past several years could soon have new ownership.
The real estate group which owns Northlake Mall is looking to sell the property and has a potential buyer. Court documents confirm a property group out of Georgia, Hull Properties, is interested in buying Northlake.
Shoppers said they hope if the sale goes through, the company can revitalize the mall.
"It's just been in the past few recent years that some kids that were irresponsible has given the mall a semi-black eye," said James Allen, a frequent shopper.
Northlake shopper James Allen and Carolyn Ingram. It's no secret Northlake Mall has had its share of headlines since opening in 2005, from shootings, to teen curfews, to major retailers moving out. That hasn't stopped some people from bringing there business here.
"We're here at least, I know, twice a month," said Carolyn Ingram.
Even so, people have noticed not as many people coming around. Several high-profile stores have left since the pandemic, including Dick's Sporting Goods, Apple and American Eagle.
"It was pretty empty," said Quality Jones when she went into the mall Thursday afternoon.
Customers are hoping a new owner could resurrect this once-thriving mall. Court documents show Spinoso Realty Group has come to an agreement with Hull Properties to buy the mall for $39 million. It's a stark difference from the price tag more than a decade ago of $248 million. A judge will have to approve the purchase.
"Having different kinds of interactions in a mall, things that people want to go see," said Jones.
Mall-goers already have ideas about what they'd like to see.
"Some more expanded food court," said Allen.
Others want more outdoor seating.

"I would like to see like an outside mall area where people can just sit and eat lunch and just mingle together," said Ingram.
Hull Properties owns 35 East Coast malls, including six in North Carolina. One of those is Carolina Mall in Concord.
The company's experience makes shoppers optimistic new management could give the troubled mall a new lease on life.
"Maybe he just knows what to invest in and how to change the clientele that come there because I'm pretty sure that has a lot to do with it," said Jones.
Queen City News reached out to Hull Properties to see what plans leaders have for Northlake Mall if they move forward with the purchase. We're waiting to hear back.
We should know more about whether the sale goes through toward the end of January.
