A Willits man was arrested in Ukiah on suspicion of illegally possessing a firearm concealed in his vehicle, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
According to the UPD, an officer on patrol near Wal-Mart on Airport Park Boulevard around 9 p.m. Jan. 11 observed a man at a pickup truck that reportedly had multiple California Vehicle Code violations and described the man as “hastily walking away from the pickup upon seeing the officer.”
UPD officers then approached the man as he later exited Wal-Mart and returned to his pickup truck, where they reported seeing “drug paraphernalia in plain view inside” the vehicle.
On a subsequent “probable cause” search of the suspect, identified as Dustin R. Bruce, 41, of Willits, the officers reported finding “a bindle of methamphetamine,” then inside the truck they reported finding “a loaded .22 caliber rifle, multiple rounds of ammunition in different calibers, and drug paraphernalia.”
A records check reportedly showed that “Bruce was a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition,” and that he was “in violation of California’s newly formed law 11395(b) H&S: unlawful possession of a hard drug with two or more prior convictions for possession (Prop. 36).”
Bruce was arrested and booked into the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm and a controlled substance, illegally possessing a weapon and ammunition, possessing drugs with prior convictions, concealing a firearm in a vehicle and possessing drug paraphernalia. He was held under $35,000 bail.
