Now more than ever, especially as wildfires rage in Southern California, burn risks are present in every living space, from homes to apartments to temporary shelters.

During National Burn Awareness Week (Feb. 2–8,) the Burn Institute joins the American Burn Association in raising awareness about preventing burn injuries and fires in the home.

This year’s theme, “Burn Prevention Starts Where You Live,” highlights practical steps to reduce burn hazards in kitchens, bathrooms, sleeping areas, and storage spaces. Simple, proactive changes can help prevent life-altering injuries and create safer living environments for everyone.

Prevent Burn Injuries Where You Live

Some key tips include:

Kitchen Safety: Store flammable items away from heat, turn pot handles inward, and never leave cooking food unattended.  Bathroom Precautions: Set your water heater below 120°F and supervise children in the bath.  Sleeping Areas: Extinguish candles before sleeping and keep heat sources away from fabrics.  General Home Safety: Test smoke alarms regularly, charge devices safely, and store chemicals out of reach.

Burn injuries continue to be a significant public health issue, with more than 398,000 people seeking medical care for burns in the United States in 2021, according to the CDC. Compared to the overall population, children under five were twice as likely to be seen for burn injuries at a hospital emergency department. Many of these injuries occur in the home and are preventable through awareness and education.

The Burn Institute’s commitment to awareness and education is one of the pillars of our mission and we are pleased to announce we have partnered with Little Fish Comic Book Studio to reimagine the Fire Safe Kids coloring book and classroom presentations, bringing a fresh and inclusive approach to fire safety education. This collaboration modernized the book with engaging comic book-style illustrations that resonate with today’s youth, enhancing equity and diversity by featuring a multiethnic cast of characters. Thoughtful updates included colorblind-friendly layouts and dyslexic-friendly fonts, ensuring accessibility for visual learners and children learning English as a second language.

The Fire Safe Kids program reaches tens of thousands of students across San Diego County annually, empowering children to learn life-saving fire safety tips about their homes and share this knowledge with their families. In 2024, the program reached nearly 50,000 children in San Diego and Imperial Counties.

The Burn Institute and Little Fish Comic Book Studio will kick off the unveiling of the newly designed book during the Burn Institute’s Annual Burn Survivor Picnic on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Liberty Station Park (next to the playgrounds).

While the picnic is limited to the Burn Survivor community, the media is invited to attend to learn Fire Safety tips to kick off Burn Awareness Week, learn more about the impact the Burn Institute has on the lives of burn survivors, and learn about Little Fish Comic Book Studio’s commitment to community partnerships. Artists will be on hand to provide drawing lessons.
