News broke on Monday that McCarthy and the Cowboys couldn’t agree to a potential contract extension.

Just hours later, the Cowboys front office took place in mandatory inclusive hiring training.

The training was introduced in 2022 is one of the first steps of the NFL‘s multi-step hiring process.

Any person involved in hiring a candidate must complete this training if they have not in the previous two seasons.

With training completed, the Cowboys can begin their search for a head coach for the first time in five years.

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are well behind other teams, who have been in the hiring process for weeks already, but they already have some favorites.

Bill Belichick could be at the top of Dallas’ list despite his new college coaching job.

Jones has a good relationship with Belichick and reports surfaced last month that the former New England Patriots coach would be interested in the job if it became available.

The one roadblock in hiring Belichick is the $10 million buyout in his contract with North Carolina.

That money likely wouldn’t stop an owner like Jones from going in for Belichick, but the buyout does drop to $1 million after June 1.

If Jones wants to check in on some of the other top options he will have to wait a few weeks.

Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator of the Lions, is considered one of the top coaching prospects available this year.

He completed interviews with the Patriots, Jaguars, Raiders, and Bears over the weekend before stopping to focus on the Detroit Lions game ahead.

At this point, Johnson cannot conduct any more interviews until the Lions’ season has been completed.

This is the same for any coach on the Kansas City Chiefs.

If Jones is interested in a candidate who coached in the Wild Card round, he can interview them three days after their victory.

Those interviews have to be completed by Sunday, January 19.

Any other coaches not currently in the playoffs can interview freely with the Cowboys.

As things currently stand, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is the favorite for the job, according to Betfair.

Deion Sanders is the second favorite for the job.
