MCDONALD’S is shutting down at least three of its new CosMc’s spin-off locations only a year after they opened.

The fast food giant confirmed the closure update last week, but won’t be scrapping the project whatsoever.

In fact, there will be two new CosMc’s openings alongside the three axed locations, per a press release earlier in January.

The two new CosMc’s will be notably smaller than the three larger closing locations and are set to be fully operational in Texas later this year.

CosMc’s is effectively McDonald’s answer to competing with coffeehouse giants like Starbucks.

It offers strictly specialty drinks, coffee, lattes, small bites, baked goods, soft-serve ice cream, and even some sandwiches.

Some menu items include the Berry Hibiscus Sour-ade, Pomegranate Hibiscus Slush, Iced French Toast Galaxy Latte, S’mores Cold Brew, Cookie Butter McPops, and Citrus & Cream Shake.

McDonald’s has noted the Island Pick Me Up Punch, Churro Cold Brew Frappe, Sour Energy Burst, Hashbrown Bites, and McPops as top sellers.

CosMc’s launched in December 2023, with the first location opening in Bolingbrook, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, and featuring a drive-thru-only format.

There were also plans for CosMc’s to have nine restaurants in Texas, with six opening in The Lone Star State over the past year.

McDonald’s didn’t provide information on exactly where in Texas the two new locations will be, but the CosMc’s website notes one arriving in Allen, about 29 miles northeast of downtown Dallas, soon.

There was also no information provided about the exact locations of the three larger CosMc’s locations closing.

The fast food giant said the departure from the larger locations and focus on a smaller design comes as they’ve seen it tend to work better, specifically with a drive-thru and digital ordering.

The U.S. Sun has contacted McDonald’s for more information.

It’s no secret that CosMc’s has been popular since its introduction.

Customers have cited long drive-thru waits at open locations with those eager to get their favorite food and drinks.

McDonald’s also promised that it would continue working on bringing more CosMc’s to Americans.

“We have just scratched the surface about what we can learn about this growing category,” the fast food giant said while speaking with Restaurant Dive.

“The tests will continue for the foreseeable future as CosMc’s continues to grow.”

Competitors like Taco Bell and KFC are also following McDonald’s lead with the spin-off ideas.

Taco Bell notably launched the Live Más Café in California recently, which similarly centers around specialty beverages and food.

KFC also brought its Saucy test restaurant to Florida, which focuses on chicken tender offerings and 11 different sauce options.
