THE Dallas Cowboys are running out of time to agree a contract with Mike McCarthy before he becomes a free agent.

McCarthy, 61, is out of a job after his current deal ends on Tuesday.

And both the team and McCarthy have been in deep discussions over a new contract.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero gave an update on the situation Saturday.

He said that meetings between all parties took place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Owner Jerry Jones, McCarthy and Cowboys executives discussed the 2024 season and also looked ahead to 2025.

Pelissero added that both sides are open to a new contract for McCarthy to stay as coach next season.

But Dallas’ exclusive window with him expires Tuesday.

After that, McCarthy will be able to talk to other teams about coaching opportunities.

And his assistants will also become free agents at the same time.

McCarthy has been head coach of the Cowboys since 2020.

He has led them to a 12-5 record and the playoffs three years running.

But this season they slipped to 3-7 with a string of heavy defeats at home.

Jones faced calls to sack McCarthy with Dallas’ playoff hopes all but extinguished before Thanksgiving.

The Cowboys staged a mini-revival with four wins in five.

But back-to-back defeats to end the season means they finished 7-10 and third in the NFC East.

McCarthy and Jones both refused to be drawn on contract negotiations ahead of the Week 18 game against Washington.

'Match made in heaven'

Deion Sanders becoming head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is a match made in heaven.

It’s been 30 years now since the Cowboys last won a Super Bowl and something has to change.

This is “America’s Team,” but it has become a laughing stock and needs someone to restore them to their past glory.

That candidate who takes over from Mike McCarthy at head coach must have some magic and inspiration.

Step forward, Deion Sanders.

Sanders, 57, is one of the best players to have ever stepped on the field and was on Dallas’ team the last time they won a Super Bowl.

He is quite literally ‘Prime Time’ and that spark is exactly what the Cowboys need.

As for Deion, now is the perfect time for him to move on as well.

He has taken the Buffaloes to new heights both in terms of results and popularity.

His son, Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, is also in his senior year in college.

Sanders could probably land a head coaching job on a legitimate national championship contender if he wants to stay in college.

But a chance to coach the Dallas Cowboys may not come calling again.

McCarthy said, “I do appreciate the opportunity to speak on it.

“I’ve answered this question the same for however many months now, so I think the focus, I need to make sure I’m doing exactly what I’m asking everyone else to do.

“We need to finish the race.

“It’s been a challenging year, based on our contract situation for coaches.

“It’s stating the obvious, but we’ll have time to talk about that next week.”

While Jones added, “What I’m not going to do is to get into any indication one way or the other that I’m not interested in having Mike back.

“I don’t want that to be the case at all.

“We got this game ahead of us, but I’ll assure you I’ve been for weeks thinking about how we’ll go forward after this season.”
