T20 cricket has evolved over the years, starting with the T20 Blast in 2003 in England. Gradually, T20 leagues took over different countries, and many have their own leagues. However, there are a few that have gained much attention, and deservedly so. Two of the most preferred leagues to watch are the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash League , which are among the most entertaining T20 leagues in the world. IPL, played in India, and BBL, played in Australia, both showcase the best domestic talent with a blend of overseas players, delivering full cricketing action. Both are cash-rich leagues, but do you know what the key differences are between these two world-class leagues? Let’s take a look at some important comparison points between the IPL and BBL.

IPL vs BBL salary difference

BBL salary structure

Much like the Pakistan Super League, there are several salary tiers, Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The Platinum tier, with a salary range of $340,000 to $420,000, is reserved for marquee players or notable big names. Next comes the Gold tier, offering between $200,000 and $300,000, which includes high-performing international stars, along with experienced and top domestic players. After that, players in the Silver tier, earning between $100,000 and $180,000, are emerging talents. Finally, the Bronze tier, with salaries up to $90,000, is designated for newcomers looking to make their mark on this big stage.

IPL salary structure

When it comes to the IPL, the structure is entirely different compared to salary categories in leagues like the BBL. There are no predefined salary categories; instead, there is an auction setup. Players enter the auction with a base price, and it is up to the franchises to determine how much they are willing to pay. However, teams have an allocated budget within which they need to acquire players’ services. Also, in the past, the minimum base price for a player was 10 lakh rupees, which has now increased to 30 lakh rupees.

IPL vs BBL format difference

The format is almost the same, but the number of matches is different. Usually, it is the IPL that sees the big 2-month window. Apart from that, when it comes to the match structure in the BBL, 8 teams are involved, with each team facing three opponents twice and four opponents once. In the IPL, there are 10 teams, and each team plays 14 matches against other teams, with 7 home and 7 away games. Then, just like the BBL, the top four teams at the end of the league stage will advance to the playoffs, and the two teams for the final.
