Bad weather around the UK is wreaking havoc with the football schedule this weekend.
The third round of the FA Cup got underway on Thursday, with Everton’s win over Peterborough avoiding postponement.
Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United was almost postponedAFPThe Premier League club were permitted to host the League One outfit following an afternoon meeting regarding fan safety due to the snow-effected area.
However, teams around the country with worse facilities than Goodison Park have not been as fortunate in battling the cold.
Games in the FA Cup and across the EFL are dropping like flies as clubs reluctantly call off their fixtures.
One of those matches was between Grimsby Town and Notts County, with that clash postponed less than two hours before kick-off.
A statement from Grimsby posted at 10:57am before a 12:30pm start read: “Following the pitch inspection, the referee has deemed the small areas of the pitch are unplayable, despite the best efforts of our ground staff.
“We apologise for the inconvenience the late call has caused for the supporters of both clubs.”
In early December, Storm Darragh caused havoc for fixtures in the UK and 2025’s frosty conditions have since followed suit.
According to the Met Office, temperatures across England are dropping well below freezing bringing with it snow and ice.
Which FA Cup matches have been postponed?
So far, just two third round games have been called off due to frozen pitches but more may follow.
An all-League One tie between Mansfield and Wigan was due to take place in this evening’s slot of games but has been postponed.
Temperatures are expected to reach -10 C this weekend in some parts of the UKGettyTheir domestic rivals Charlton were also due to take a trip to battle Championship side Preston at 3pm but likewise won’t play.
Both fixtures have been rescheduled to take place on Tuesday, 14 January, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm.
Mansfield said in a statement: “Frost covers have been on the playing surface all week in an attempt to protect the pitch, however, with temperatures reaching as low as -7C in the early hours of this morning and not forecast to rise above freezing within the next 24 hours, an early decision has been made to postpone the game.”
Preston said: “A pitch inspection took place at Deepdale on Friday by match referee Ruebyn Ricardo and the surface was deemed unplayable.
“Despite the tireless work of the club’s grounds staff to prepare the pitch for this fixture, the sub-zero temperatures throughout the week and overnight on Thursday mean the surface remains frozen.
“With similar conditions expected again on Friday evening into Saturday morning, a decision has been made early in consideration of travel plans for supporters, and the players and staff of Charlton Athletic.”
