To be clear, the vibes on the Chicago Cubs landing Roki Sasaki should never have been particularly high to begin with, and I’ve done my best to keep folks’ hopes in check from the jump. The rumors on the Dodgers – and then, at least lightly, the Padres – were just so strong from early on that it felt inevitable that the Cubs would be among the teams missing out.
That said, if the vibes were low yesterday, they’ve gotta be a click lower now:
On ESPN1000, @JesseRogersESPN says Roki Sasaki stuff is heating up, but he's not heard that Roki is going to visit Chicago (but very well may be visiting other cities). So the vibes don't seem great.
— Bleacher Nation (@BleacherNation) January 10, 2025If Roki Sasaki does indeed take city visits, as Rogers believes is happening, and one of those visits is not to Chicago? Then that’s that. It would mean they are no longer under serious consideration. (And the way Rogers was saying it, just kinda felt like the Chicago visit wasn’t going to happen.)
Now, like I said earlier, it could be that the city visit thing is going to be extremely limited anyway, and maybe only L.A. (where he was meeting and training already) and San Diego (which is quite close) are the only places he goes. Wouldn’t feel too bad about not getting a Hometown Date in that case. But if Sasaki goes to San Francisco and Arlington and New York and Seattle? Yeah, then I’ll be bummed that the Cubs didn’t even get to that stage of the process.
Not that it REALLY matters if they were ultimately going to miss out in the end. Which does now sound like the most likely outcome.
A reminder that Sasaki cannot sign until January 15, which is when the next IFA period opens up. He must sign by January 23, which is when his posting window closes. So we’ll have this sorted soon enough, and in the meantime, here’s hoping the Cubs have a good idea of what they want to do on the roster in the absence of shockingly landing an ace for a mere international bonus (siiiiighhhhhh).
