Olympic Athlete Recalls Being ‘Surrounded by Flames’ Before Loss of Medals in Palisades Fire ...Saudi Arabia

The American swimmer said in an interview published on Thursday, Jan. 9, by The Sydney Morning Herald that the home he rented in Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades neighborhood was one of the many structures that burned when the Palisades Fire tore through the area this week. The fire “was worse than any apocalypse movie you’ve ever seen and 1000 times worse,” he told the Australian paper.

The three-time Olympian described the “mayhem” that he observed as he and thousands of others evacuated from the area. “We were surrounded by flames,” he said, recalling that “embers were raining down on me” when it was time to go. "I had time to grab my dog and just a couple of personal items,” he said, adding, “It’s just every person for themselves.”

Hall, 50, told the paper that his 10 Olympic medals were among the many possessions that he “did not have time” to grab before evacuating. "Everyone wants to know did the medals burn? Yeah, everything burnt,” he said. Despite the gravity of the loss, Hall said his medals are “something I can live without.”

First responders continued to battle the Palisades Fire on Thursday afternoon, with the wildfire burning more than 17,200 acres as of 2:20 p.m. local time, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). Firefighters nearby were also battling the Eaton Fire, which had burned more than 13,600 acres as of 3:50 p.m. local time on Thursday. Both of the fires, which authorities said started on Tuesday, Jan. 7, were at 0 percent containment by late Thursday afternoon.
