New baggage policy means luggage can be checked before your plane even lands ...Middle East

A GROUNDBREAKING baggage policy has been introduced to help slash wait times and improve your flying journey.

The new policy will allow passengers flying to the US from foreign countries to catch their connecting flights without having their bags re-checked.

According to the new plans, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers can now see the same checked baggage x-ray images captured at foreign international airports.

Under the International Remote Baggage Screening initiative, officers can also review the bags remotely before the aircraft even lands.

The CBP website says the new policy “enables CBP to assess potential security risks more effectively and expedites the processing of arriving flights”.

Diane J. Sabatino,  Acting Executive Assistant Commissioner, Office of Field Operations, said: “As part of our innovation efforts in air travel, CBP is leveraging technology to enhance baggage inspections to further secure and streamline travel.

“The International Remote Baggage Screening initiative is a significant step forward in modernizing our processes and providing a secure and seamless experience for international travelers.”

It comes after the TSA banned a popular travel item that could throw off packing plans for flyers.

The Transportation Security Administration has quietly updated its guidelines to include more restrictions on checked luggage.

The new ban comes despite the agency recently loosening decades-long rules on the size of liquids passengers can carry in non-checked bags at some airports.

New CT scanners are being installed in some of the country’s busiest airports, allowing for full-sized items to be carried in any bag.

The scanners use 3D imaging technology to examine the contents of a bag and assess any potential threats.

Flyers at participating airports will now be able to bring 11 new items in carry-on bags and personal belongings, including over-the-counter medications, prescription medicines in liquid form, wet batteries, live fish, biological specimens, and fresh eggs.

Atlanta, JFK, and LAX airports are the first to test the new technology.

It’s important to remember that not every airport in the country has adopted the rule yet, so if a person isn’t flying out of one of the airports above, they are still restricted to the 3.4-ounce rule.

But while some carry-on rules are loosening, TSA is still particular about what can be brought in checked luggage.

The agency banned power banks used to charge mobile batteries starting on March 1, though they’re still allowed in carry-on bags.

Which items are affected?

The affected lithium batteries banned by the TSA include:

Power banks Cell phone battery charging cases Rechargeable and non-rechargeable lithium batteries Cell phone batteries Laptop batteries External batteries Portable rechargers

It comes after a power bank sparked a frightening fire onboard an international flight in January.

The incident occurred in South Korea during boarding for Air Busan flight BX391.

A portable charger is believed to have sparked a fire in the overhead bin before the plane took off, leading the crew to evacuate 170 passengers.

Multiple travelers were injured as smoke filled the aircraft, which was ultimately damaged beyond repair.

Several major airlines, including Air Busan, EVA Air, and China Airlines barred power banks from checked bags before TSA took the leap.

Passengers are urged to use the onboard power outlets, which

The FAA stressed that battery terminals should be protected from short-circuiting.

Passengers must also remove any spares if their carry-on bag is checked at the gate.

Items like cameras, laptops, and tablets with installed batteries are still allowed in both carry-on and checked luggage.
