Thomas Brown Gets His First Win — And a Head Coaching Interview Will Soon Follow ...Middle East

The behind-the-scenes look at Thomas Brown’s first win as a head coach is exactly what you might expect they would be after the Chicago Bears’ Week 18 victory against the Green Bay Packers.

So of course I was going to re-share the footage via the Bears’ official Twitter/X page:

What a cool moment. For Thomas Brown, Caleb Williams, Kevin Warren, and everyone else in that locker room. This team found so many ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory throughout the season that I found it enjoyable that the Bears were able to scrape together enough plays for a win. That it came against the Packers and kept them from moving up in playoff seeding is a cherry on top.

What a mind-bending win by Chicago’s football team. Think about what we saw unfold at Lambeau Field on Sunday:

First Bears win against the Packers since 2018. First Bears win against the Packers on the road since 2015. Caleb Williams’ first win against an NFC North team, first win on the road vs. a division rival, and first Bears QB to win at Lanbeau Field since Jay Cutler did it in 2015. Thomas Brown’s first win as a head coach.

In what has been nothing more than a lost year, it is nice to find one silver lining in the dark cloud that was the 2024 season. And I love the message from Coach Brown in the video above. The idea that “ease is the enemy of success” should resonate with folks. Especially Bears fans who remember how this team’s offensive leaders had a meeting with their former offensive coordinator in hopes that he would coach them harder. I strongly encourage you to re-watch it if you get a chance.

Thomas Brown will interview for the Bears head coach position

Even with a win against the Green Bay Packers in the season finale, I do not know if Thomas Brown has done enough to convince Bears management to drop the interim tag and make him the full-time head coach. Beating the Packers looks nice on the résumé, but the four losses that came before the win don’t go away just because Chicago won on Sunday in Green Bay.

With that being said, Bears General Manager Ryan Poles said during his pre-game interview on ESPN-1000 (h/t Peggy Kusinski) that Brown *WILL* get a chance at a formal interview for the job. What that interview process entails figures to be a doozy. But considering what this franchise put Thomas Brown through, the least the powers that be can do is give him an interview, let him make his case, hear out whatever he has to say, and write him a letter of recommendation whenever any other team checks in with the Bears as they do their vetting.

If the Bears do not run it back with Thomas Brown, it is not as if there is a shortage of candidates on their radar. Former Tennessee Titans Head Coach Mike Vrabel is expected to interview for the job this week. Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson can have a virtual interview as soon as this week if the Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football. Washington Commanders Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is also presumed to be on the interview list, but his interview will have to wait a bit. Super Bowl-winning coaches Mike McCarthy and Pete Carroll have reportedly shown interest in the Bears gig. And in the case of Carroll, the interest is reportedly mutual.
