A 45-year-old woman is dead after her car was struck by an Evans driver who police say was fleeing them after a separate, hit-and-run crash.
The woman — and a 58-year-old man in the passenger seat — were taken to a hospital to be treated for serious injuries, where the woman was later pronounced dead, according to a department Facebook post. As of Sunday afternoon, the department did not have an update on the other victim.
“EPD has extended — and will continue to do so — their condolences and support for her family, friends and co-workers,” the department wrote in the post.
Police arrested 28-year-old Cody Riley at the scene of the second crash. He was booked on suspicion of two counts of vehicular assault, failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in an injury, careless driving and several other traffic infractions, but police say the charges will be updated since one of the victims died.
The Weld County District Attorney’s Office has until Jan. 14 to officially file the charges, according to Colorado court records. Records show the case is classified as a vehicular homicide.
Around 6 p.m. Friday, Evans police officers were dispatched to U.S. 85 and 31st Street on a report of a hit-and-run crash. Police say initial reports indicated a Mazda SUV collided with a Ram pickup.
The driver of the Mazda — later identified as Riley — fled the scene, and the victim in the Ram followed the Mazda while on the phone with a dispatcher, updating police on its whereabouts, according to the post.
Police say they located Riley at 23rd Avenue and 32nd Street, where he eluded officers, heading southbound on 23rd. He ran a red light at 37th Avenue, where he collided with a Subaru SUV, according to the post.
The occupants of the Subaru — a 45-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man — were taken to a hospital to be treated for serious injuries, where the woman was later pronounced dead, police say.
Officers took Riley into custody at the scene of that crash, and he was taken to the Weld County Jail after receiving medical treatment.
The Weld County Coroner will release the name of the deceased victim once they notify next of kin.
