San Diego County is home to a celebrity feline —  Noah, an orange tabby adopted from Rancho Coastal Humane Society, has earned the title of Newsweek’s first-ever “Pet of the Year” for 2024.

The honor came after the magazine opened voting to readers, who were charmed by Noah’s remarkable story and adventurous spirit.

Noah’s journey to fame began in 2019 when Kathleen Kastner adopted him from Rancho Coastal, where she has long served as a cat volunteer at the humane society.

Noah had spent the first five years of his life living on the streets, and Kastner was determined to give him a loving home.

“I wanted to keep him safe as an indoor cat,” Kastner said. “But he kept trying to escape.”

Recognizing Noah’s need for fresh air and adventure, Kastner’s husband built a “catio”— a secure outdoor enclosure — and the couple began taking Noah on leash walks.

Noah’s favorite spots in Encinitas aren’t far from home. He’s not a fan of car rides, preferring instead to visit nearby neighbors’ houses.

“If he doesn’t see a neighbor, he cries in their driveway, waiting for visitors,” Kastner said.

Known affectionately as “the coolest cat on the block,” Noah has become a beloved figure in his neighborhood, often spotted warmly greeting humans and embarking on bold adventures.

Noah’s new “Pet of the Year” title is more than just an accolade — it’s a powerful reminder of the potential in every pet adoption.

“He’s proud of his title and hopes he can be an example that street cats can become loving family members.”

Noah’s rescue story is also featured in Kastner’s children’s book “Karma Cats to the Rescue,” which teaches children the importance of kindness to animals.

Noah was chosen from an impressive lineup of 10 finalists, including Me Meow, a cat who insisted on daily showers, and Rottweiler George, who taught his brother to swim, according to Newsweek.

For a regular dose of whiskered antics only Noah can deliver, the public can follow his adventures on Instagram at @noahsecretagent.
