San Diego County on Tuesday urged residents to help cut down on holiday waste by turning their Christmas trees into nutrient-rich compost or mulch.

Through mulching or composting, trees are broken down into organic material that enriches soil with essential nutrients. The process reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and also plays a critical role in lowering greenhouse gas emissions, as decomposing organic waste in landfills produces methane, a potent contributor to climate change.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, organic materials like Christmas trees, food and yard waste are the most numerous materials sent to landfills, comprising two-thirds of total solid waste.

I Love a Clean San Diego has a guide on how and where to recycle your Christmas trees.

Following are some simple tips for successful Christmas tree recycling:

All tinsel must be completely removed from a tree before it can be recycled. Make sure to remove all ornaments, garlands, lights, nails, tree bags, tree stands, metal or plastic before recycling. Trees taller than four feet should be cut in half. Each piece should be under four feet. Reuse or donate artificial trees. Organic wreaths and similar decorations can be recycled along with trees. Don’t let real trees sit around for long after the holidays as they can dry out and become fire hazards.

Officials also offered a tip for next year – do not flock or buy flocked trees, as the fake snow contains chemicals that interfere with composting.
