“The people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family,” the Chinese leader said in the televised address. “No one can sever our family bonds, and no one can stop the historical trend of national reunification.”
China regards Taiwan as its own territory, but Taipei’s democratically elected government considers itself independent.
Washington has a policy of ambiguity towards Taiwan, maintaining diplomatic relations without formally recognising its independence. President Joe Biden said in 2022 that US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.

The Chinese leader also held talks with Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, yesterday. He said China and Russia were moving forward “hand in hand,” according to Chinese state media.
China has officially maintained neutrality in Russia’s war with Ukraine, although Beijing is believed to be supplying components such as microelectronics that have been critical to maintaining Moscow’s war effort.
