Maile Izumita-Souza scored in overtime and goalie Tatum Trout made five saves to lead Edison’s girls soccer team past Sunset League rival Los Alamitos 1-0 in the championship of the Excalibur Tournament of Champions at Foothill High on Saturday.
In capturing the tournament for the first time since 1997, the Chargers (7-4-2) beat defending champion Huntington Beach (8-1-4) in penalty kicks in the semifinals earlier Saturday after regulation ended tied 1-1.
Riley Crooks, a senior who signed with Texas A & M, scored the winner to give Edison a 5-4 win in penalty kicks. Sadie Olivares netted the Chargers’ goal in regulation.
“Believe it or not, we lost 16 players from last year’s team due to graduation and injury,” said Edison coach Kerry Crooks, who is also the mother of Riley Crooks. “I’m an old-school coach so any time I can coach a team that shows grit and determination despite not having the experience, and get an awesome result, I’m a happy camper.”
“While we started out slow in our season while a couple key players were out due to club commitments, we have worked hard these past couple weeks to sort out our team personality,” the coach added. “It warms my player heart to see the girls experience the complete joy of winning a tournament in such dramatic fashion — from the joyful dogpile to all the hugs.”
The Chargers opened the Excalibur with a 3-1 victory against Millikan on Dec. 26 and added a 3-0 triumph against Etiwanda on Dec. 27.
Tatum, a junior playing varsity for the first time, racked up 15 saves in the Excalibur en route to being named tournament MVP. The Chargers are 5-0-2 since she joined the squad.
Los Alamitos (7-3-1) defeated upstart Foothill 1-0 in the other semifinal.
In 1997 Excalibur final, Edison beat La Costa Canyon 2-0.
In other Edison girls soccer news, Riley Crooks is graduating early to train with Texas A & M for the fall season, her mother confirmed.
