Many of us have seen the Instagram posts from former Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews as he literally searches the world for ways to fix his body and mind. In a detailed interview with GQ, Toews gives readers and fans a pretty intense look at what he’s been doing in India recently. It’s intense and sounds painful at times.
According to Toews, his physical issues go all the way back to his teenage years and the early days of his NHL career. He dealt with trouble sleeping and digestive problems and just assumed it was all part of the life of a high-level professional athlete. (Hint: it’s not.)
But, as Toews puts it, “the wheels came off” when he got COVID in February of 2020. He says a nasty cough that kept him up all night turned into a snowball effect that shut everything down. As he searched for a fix to his chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) symptoms through a range of practices, medicines and diet changes, someone suggested an Ayurvedic retreat in India. Though he didn’t take it seriously at first, when he decided to take a step away from the game to get his body right Toews decided to look into it further. His first trip was in September of 2023.
I encourage you to read the interview, because the details shared by Toews of the treatments aren’t pretty. Lots of liquids going in and coming out. But it sounds like he’s feeling better in every regard of his life, which is more important than anything else.
But… Toews closes the interview answering a couple questions about his future when he returns to North America. Will he keep Ayurveda part of his regular life? And… is he done with hockey, or… ?
“I haven’t spoken about this to a lot of people, but it’s definitely still in there. I’ve talked to a lot of the guys that are done, and a lot of them will say that desire to be on the ice competing and to be in the locker room with the guys never goes away. It’s just something that you have to accept when your time comes. So there’s that, but at the same time, I think there’s a big part of me that really wants to give it my all, to get back on the ice and see where it takes me.
There’s a part of me that really doesn’t feel like my career is over yet, and who knows what this next part of the journey looks like, as far as getting back on the ice and trying to make a return to the NHL. There’s never any guarantees in life, but I’m going to give it my best shot. I’m going to enjoy every step of the way. As hard as it’s been at times, I look back now and I’m pretty thankful for it all. So we’ll see what happens.”
That’s a stunner! I know the immediate reaction is going to be “come back to the Blackhawks!” While I’m not sure that’s in the cards (I would love for it to be), the fact that he still hasn’t closed the door on hockey is big news. We’ll see where it goes from here.
