The CBS Sports star’s family announced his passing in a statement to the network on Friday, Dec. 27.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel,” the statement attributed to Gumbel’s wife, Marcy, and daughter, Michelle, said. "He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer. Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity.
During his early years at CBS in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Gumbel hosted NFL Today and contributed to the network’s Olympics coverage in 1992 and 1994. Following a four-year stretch at NBC, Gumbel began working for CBS again in 1998, where he hosted College Basketball on CBS for more than 25 years.
Clark Kellogg, a sports analyst and former professional basketball player who worked with Gumbel for many years, also remembered his late friend in a Friday statement. “Like all who knew and loved him, I too am saddened by his death, yet also so very grateful to have known him in my life,” Kellogg told The Associated Press. “What a gift to be touched by such a good man and partner.”
