A Modern Way to Send Personal Handwritten Cards
One of my favorite things to receive is handwritten notes from loved ones. One of my friends from college used to send the loveliest cards and she would include a year-end newsletter summarizing all the things she experienced that year. Over the years, that handwritten card has evolved into a simple mass-produced photo card. While I appreciate receiving it, I have to admit that some of the holiday magic is lost on it.
I completely understand that people just don’t have the time to sit down and hand-write dozens of cards these days. This is exactly why Handwrytten cards was created.

User Experience
There are two things I want to point out before I dig into my Handwrytten experience. First, I had a lot of fun working with their system. You can easily spend hours seeking out the perfect card for a special occasion and selecting the particulars like the handwriting style and colors is just enjoyable. The second thing is that you really need to plan ahead — especially around high-demand holidays. I will get into this more, but my single card took 20 days to be produced and mailed to me. It did make it before the holiday (Christmas), but I was expecting it to arrive much sooner based on the estimate provided when I ordered.
Account Setup
The first step in the ordering process is to set up your account. You can browse and set up cards without an account, but I would recommend setting up the account first so that you don’t risk losing any designs. The only information request is first and last name, email address (you have the option of using a Google account, too), phone (optional), password, and signup code (if applicable). If you want to understand how Handwrytten handles your data, visit their trust center.
Choose a Design & Customize
Once your account is set up, you will be sent to the design center. This is where you select your card design. You have the ability to ‘favorite’ a card design for later use and some of the designs can be customized. Each of the cards has their individual price listed on them and when you hover over them, there is a little animation that shows the inside or blank page of the card. This helps you to determine if the card is a front/back or folded style card. If you want to be very personal, you can design your own card. This is where you would use family photos as the cover for your card.
There are dozens of categories of cards to choose from and you can also search if you have a specific design element you want to be included (i.e. a car, or a particular animal). Once you select a card design, you click ‘send’ and you will be sent to the customization/personalization page. Here you will see the pricing of the card (1 – 50,000+) and you will be asked to add your message, signature, and select your writing style. There are many styles to choose from, but I do wish that you could upload a sample of your own handwriting for the robots to mimic. Hopefully that will be something that happens in the future.
During this personalization step, you have the option to add merge fields and insert a signature. There is also a template option (if you have set one up) and an AI Assist button. This helps you to write a message if you are having trouble finding the right words.
Add Recipients & Extras
The next step is to plan your shipment by adding your return address and recipients. You are given the option to enter recipients into the address book one-by-one or in bulk. Since I was only sending one card, I entered the recipient by hand, but I love that the bulk importer is an option. During this step you will also select what date you want it to send and if you want any custom inserts, or gift cards included. At this time it appears that only business cards are allowed for custom inserts, but perhaps they will add printed photos at a later date. The Gift Card option is a really nice touch and there is a wide variety of items available.
When it comes to the send date, I want to stipulate that this is subject to availability. When I placed my order, the first available date was 12/4/24. I did not have any inserts or gift cards included as I was trying to make the order as simple as possible. Despite my best efforts to keep it simple, I still experienced tremendous delays.
Here is a timeline of my order to when I received it.
Dec 3
Placed Order; Requested send date of Dec 4 Received my order confirmation via email with a Send Date of Dec 5 listed. There was no delay in email delivery.Dec 14
“Your Order is in Process” email received. No other information provided.Dec 16
Postmark on card showing it was processed in Phoenix, AZ via USPS.Dec 21
Receivied card in the US mail. So, from order-to-received in mail the order took 18 days and the Send Date was 11 days later than planned. According to the Service Standards Map from USPS a first-class letter should have taken 4 business days to arrive. There is a note in Handwrytten’s FAQs that states, “the overall timeframe depends on the order size and the queue of existing orders at the time your order is placed.” With this in mind, I do hope that Handwrytten will update their available send date calendar options to account for the queue because I could see a lot of unhappy users thinking their order would definitely ship out on a certain day.
Pricing vs. Quality & Value
I definitely see the value in using a service like this over a bulk printing service. The card is high-quality and feels as though it was purchased at a premium card store. It doesn’t look as though it was pushed through a printer or otherwise mass-produced. The writing on it is probably the most impressive part (as it should be). It truly looks like real ink. There are points where you can see the pen left the paper and where there were pressure differences. There are even a few imperfections. I noticed this write away when I looked at the smiley face I included in my signature. One eye is larger than the other – as if the ink was already flowing out of the pen and when the robot went to tap the paper, more ink came out than was intended. I have included a side-by-side photo comparison of my order to the real product below. As far as the price goes, $4.50 for a single card to be sent to someone is a small price in comparison to what you would spend going to the pharmacy, picking out a card and sending it yourself.
Conclusion
Handwrytten offers a modern solution to the lost art of handwritten notes, combining convenience with a personal touch. While it’s a great choice for businesses and individuals seeking to send personalized, high-quality handwritten messages at scale, there are a few areas where improvements could be made. The pricing is reasonable for the value provided, but delays in shipping may impact the overall experience for time-sensitive orders. Despite this, the service shines with its customization options, ease of use, and the authentic feel of the handwritten notes.
