The San Diego Unified School District today unveiled its first “cradle-to-college and career” center in Logan Heights, while parents of students were introduced to the new facility.

El Nido at Logan Memorial Educational Campus is an infant and toddler Montessori Center intended to assist children from infancy through high school and beyond, providing resources to students and families for every stage of a child’s development.

“It has been years of tireless work to bring this vision to fruition, a collaborative effort involving district leaders, LMEC staff, educational experts, and of course, the incredible community that brings LMEC to life,” said Fabiola Bagula, SDUSD’s interim superintendent. “All of this effort is

because we believe that surrounding working families and their students with resources and support will help elevate each student to reach their true and full potential.”

The center will officially open its doors to students in January, featuring two 1,454-square-foot classrooms, equipped with Montessori materials and custom-designed furniture.

“As we open our doors, we are not just launching a center — we are building a foundation for something greater — a legacy of love, learning, and community,” said Belinda Rico, administrator of El Nido. “El Nido will be a place where every child’s curiosity is celebrated, their individuality is respected, and their potential is boundless.”

The facility also includes storage rooms, restrooms and a dedicated lactation room, as well as an outdoor play area separated into areas for 0-2 year-olds and 2-5 year-olds.

The Montessori philosophy emphasizes hands-on, self-directed learning in an environment that nurtures a child’s natural curiosity and independence.

Both the classrooms and playgrounds are “outfitted with developmentally appropriate learning materials meticulously aligned with the Montessori educational philosophy,” a statement from the district reads. This is intended to ensure both environments “foster holistic development, supports self-directed learning, and nurtures the cognitive, social, and emotional growth of every child.”

“This facility ensures that families have access to vital prenatal, toddler, and preschool services in a nurturing environment, right next to the Logan Memorial Educational Campus, which I am proud to have supported,” said Assemblyman David Alvarez, D-San Diego. “Investing in early education and keeping resources close to home ensures our children get the best possible start in life, and our students can continue their education without barriers.”

The LMEC came about as a partnership between SDUSD and Harvard University.
