Career and technical education high school students have a part in exposing Milliken Elementary School kids to a world of unexplored career possibilities.

The new partnership in the Weld RE-5J School District sets elementary and high school students up for success.

The Knights Success Lab, an enrichment, academic support and family engagement program at Milliken Elementary, has begun collaborating with Roosevelt High School’s College and Career Pathways programs, according to a Weld RE-5J news release.

The lab aims to “improve academic performance, boost engagement in learning and foster the discovery of students’ passions” by helping elementary students find their passions and build the necessary skills for educational success.

The partnership will expand the lab’s mission by allowing high school students in career and technical student organizations, or student-led organizations designed to develop leadership, technical expertise and career readiness, to “inspire the younger generation,” the release said.

These higher schoolers offer hands-on learning experiences, from building wooden jack-o’-lanterns to decorating cookies, in various pathways and potential careers that Milliken Elementary feels thrilled about, according to Kasey Ross, 21st Century Program manager at the elementary school.

“We are thrilled to have Roosevelt High School’s students partner with our elementary students,” Ross said in the release. “By exposing our students to real-world career pathways and helping them make connections to their academic work, we’re helping to foster a mindset of possibility and preparing them to envision and reach for their future aspirations.”

During the fall semester, the Knights Success Lab hosted interactive and educational activities directly from high school students in their respective fields, including FFA, Health Occupations Students of America, Professional Culinary Arts and Hospitality, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and the robotics/drones teams, according to the release.

High school students shared personal experiences and insights about their educational journeys and the unique opportunities that await the future Roosevelt Roughriders.

The growing partnership will explore new ways to integrate local high school programs into the enrichment offerings at the Knights Success Lab, laying the groundwork for a future generation of career-ready students.

“Our career and technical student organizations students have the opportunity to be mentors and leaders, while the elementary students gain valuable insight into the skills, opportunities and pathways that lie ahead,” Director of Career and Innovation Rebecca Albert Vollrath said. “This partnership is a win-win for everyone involved and aligns perfectly with our mission to prepare students for success in both their education and future careers.”
