North Carolina’s Electoral College members met at the State Capitol Tuesday to cast the state’s 16 official ballots for President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance.
Electors all over the country convened in their respective state capitals on Tuesday to cast their votes and send them to Washington. Congress will meet on Jan. 6 of next year to certify the votes before the Jan. 20 inauguration.
With 538 electoral votes, a candidate must receive a majority 270 to secure the presidency.
The Trump-Vance ticket defeated Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz by winning 312 electoral votes to 226.
North Carolina has 16 electoral votes — one for each of its 14 representatives in the U.S. House and two for its two U.S. Senators.
Trump won the state and all 16 electoral votes in the winner-takes-all system, so the North Carolina Republican Party got to nominate the electors.
“The Electoral College represents a proud history of citizens peacefully passing on presidential power from one term in office to the next,” North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall said.
The members selected elector Daniel Barry as the president of North Carolina’s 59th Electoral College. He presided over the rest of the ceremony, where the members cast their ballots for Trump and Vance.
NCGOP chair Jason Simmons of New Hill and vice chair Susan Mills of Fayetteville served as the state’s two at large electors.
