I know he technically plays for a division rival, but David Montgomery has always been someone I’ve still rooted for after departing the Bears. Despite not playing for the best teams, he was a good player and always ran his tail off while playing for Chicago’s football team.
While there was some debate about whether or not to bring him back when his contract ran up a few years ago, there’s no doubt now that letting him go to Detroit on a pretty team-friendly deal was the wrong move. In 28 games as a Lion, Montgomery has rushed for 25 touchdowns and nearly 1,800 yards. He and Jahmyr Gibbs have paired up to make one of, if not the top running back tandems in all of football while the Bears have struggled quite a bit to find a consistent answer in the backfield.
Unfortunately for Detroit and Monty, though, it seems like the 27-year-old running back’s season has come to an end. After suffering a torn MCL in yesterday’s loss to the Bills, Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed this afternoon what many speculated was the case this morning, David Montgomery will have surgery on his knee and miss the rest of the season.

The loss of Montgomery is a huge hit to a Detroit offense that has been firing on all cylinders this season. He was leading the team in total touchdowns with 12 and has almost a dead-even split with Jahmyr Gibbs in carries. The Lions have suffered quite a few injuries on the defensive side of the ball this year, but their offense has been able to pick up a lot of that slack. This represents a major loss to that unit.
Fortunately for the Lions, they still do have one of the game’s best running backs in Gibbs and arguably the top offensive line in football. While you can’t just say someone can step in and immediately fill Montgomery’s shoes, with how good that line is I don’t think there should be a huge drop-off in Detroit’s ability to run the ball.
After the 48-42 barn-burner loss to Buffalo yesterday, Detroit sits at 12-2 and atop the NFC North with wins above the two teams chasing them for the division crown – Green Bay and Minnesota. Their remaining schedule is at the Bears, at the 49ers, and at home against the Vikings.
They’ve already clinched a playoff spot, but home-field advantage in the playoffs is going to be huge for them. We’ll see how they can rebound from losing Montgomery and their running-back tandem taking a big hit. The bright side is they’ll get three weeks to begin figuring things out, even if they do this will be a significant loss to a quality Lions offense. Let’s see what you got, Ben Johnson!
