Trade season is officially upon us. The Indiana Pacers and Golden State Warriors got the ball rolling this week. Indiana acquired backup big man Thomas Bryant from the Miami Heat, while the Golden State added a red-hot Dennis Schroder.
Might we see some more moves before the weekend comes to a close?
Warriors Acquire Dennis Schroder From Nets So why do the floodgates open today? Well, trade restrictions have officially been lifted for the large majority of free agents signed this offseason. More than 80 players are now capable of being thrown into deals, giving the league a lot more flexibility. HoopsHype went ahead and wrote every player who is now trade-eligible, and I recommend you give that post a read here. I also highly recommend Spotrac for all your trade machine needs. While Fanspo is another popular spot to dream up deals that will never happen, I think Spotrac’s design is also extremely user-friendly. For what it’s worth, not much changes in terms of the Chicago Bulls’ flexibility. Jalen Smith is the only player on the roster who previously wasn’t trade-eligible, signing a three-year, $27.0 million deal this offseason. I highly doubt the Bulls bring his name up in any trade discussions over the next couple of months. Does that mean he’s off the table? No. But he obviously fits into the youth movement this front office appears to be leaning toward. Likewise, I think he also reflects the style of play the organization wants to implement. He can stretch the floor and keep up with the team’s high PACE play. Averaging 8.1 points and 5.3 rebounds in just 15.3 minutes per game, there has been a lot to like so far. With that said, today is still a big day for the Bulls! We all know they are willing to pick up the phone and hear out offers. While teams would surely chit-chat before this date, those conversations weren’t necessarily had in earnest. Talks now take on a whole new meaning, and the more deals that get done, the more appealing some of Chicago’s assets could begin to look. Er, at least, that’s the hope! You’re Not Going to Love This New Report About Zach LaVine’s Trade Market As excited as I am about what this trade season can hold, the faith I have in this front office to get deals right is extremely low. They have a lot of work to do to build my trust back up after the Alex Caruso-Josh Giddey swap. Once again, I don’t at all mind taking a swing at a former lottery pick like Giddey, but they completely failed to appropriately leverage the market. Caruso’s value was an all-time high, while Giddey’s value was an all-time low. Throw in the fact that the Thunder have more first-round picks than any franchise in the league, and grabbing at least one pick should have been easy! At least the Bulls seem like they realize they made a mistake! A new report from Marc Stein ?which we’ll have more on later ??? stated that the Bulls are seeking a first-round pick for Nikola Vucevic after failing to secure one this offseason. All things considered, I think that is a very fair asking price when we consider his career numbers, but others don’t seem to agree! via David Banks-Imagn Images By the way, The Athletic recently put out front office rankings where they asked 40 executives to vote for their top 5 organizations. The Chicago Bulls didn’t receive a single acknowledgment. Bummer! ICYMI: Michael Jordan’s Highland Park home is officially out of his hands. After reports surfaced that there was a buyer a couple of months back, the deal officially closed this week with a $9.5 million price tag. As ABC 7 indicates, the original asking price for the home in 2012 for $29.0 million. Oof. The Chicago Bears have already made three players inactive for tomorrow night’s primetime game against the Vikings. A fan-favorite of the Chicago Cubs is headed to the Dodgers.
