Mason White’s RBI single pushed the Arizona Wildcats ahead of North Carolina in a wild eighth inning of a do-or-die Game 3 on Sunday, and Arizona held on for a 4-3 win to punch its ticket to the College World Series.
The bases were loaded for White with one out and after posting a hat trick of home runs earlier in the postseason, he came up big in the clutch for the go-ahead knock.

Arizona loaded the bases at the tail end of a gem from UNC freshman starter Ryan Lynch, who threw seven innings and allowed one run. However, traffic landed on the bases after he allowed a single and UNC botched a potential double-play ball.
The Wildcats got their first two runs of the inning after Lynch was relieved and Easton Breyfogle went down at first base on a two-RBI single.
Breyfogle bunted, and third baseman Gavin Gallaher had a poor throw to first, where the ball hit Breyfogle’s shoulder. First baseman Jackson Van De Brake followed through Breyfogle’s face with his glove while trying to reach the ball and the runner went down.
The play was reviewed for potential interference, but it was deemed not because of the poor throw that sent the ball into the runner’s track. Breyfogle left the game with a trainer.
The Tar Heels had chances to respond in the bottom of the frame off two walks surrendered by Arizona’s Casey Hintz, but a groundout ended the threat.
Tony Pluta worked the 1-2-3 save for the Wildcats, who eliminated the Tar Heels after dropping the first game, 18-2.
Arizona baseball onto Omaha for College World Series
The Wildcats are headed to their first College World Series under head coach Chip Hale after this was also the first time he led Arizona to the Super Regionals. He was named coach in July 2021.
The squad carried the momentum it had from last season’s regular season and conference tournament titles in the final season of the Pac-12 into this season, when Arizona won the Big 12 conference tournament in its first season.
Arizona was the second team with an Omaha trip clinched, and it will now face No. 13 overall seed Coastal Carolina, which swept Auburn in its Super Regional. Time and TV listings are TBD.
