Raiders Dismiss OC Luke Getsy After Blowout Loss to Bengals and Disappointing 2-7 Start

Raiders comes on the heels of a tumultuous start to the 2024 NFL season, marked by a disappointing 2-7 record. Following a particularly disheartening blowout loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Getsy's firing has sparked discussions about his effectiveness as a play-caller . Under his leadership, the Raiders' offense ranked an abysmal 26th in points and 28th in yards, highlighting significant struggles with turnover ratios that saw interceptions outnumber touchdowns. This pattern of underperformance ultimately led to mounting pressure from fans and analysts alike for organizational change.

Tom Pelissero reported on Sunday night. The team subsequently announced the parting of ways along with the oustings of QB coach Rich Scangarello and offensive line coach James Cregg.

Pierce felt he needed to make a move after Sunday's 41-24 blowout loss to the Cincinnati Bengals dropped the team to 2-7 on the season, Pelissero added.

Though an interim OC or play-caller isn't yet known, Pelissero noted former Washington offensive coordinator Scott Turner, the current passing game coordinator, is a logical candidate. Las Vegas has its bye coming up, and just how different the squad will look when it faces the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 17 will be worth monitoring.

Expectations were low entering the season because the Raiders’ quarterbacks were journeyman Gardner Minshew and second-year pro Aidan O’Connell, who was steady but far from spectacular over the final half of last season. The Raiders have since signed Desmond Ridder, who flamed out in Atlanta and was on Arizona’s practice squad.

Davante Adams, who eventually was shipped to the New York Jets.

Cregg and Scangarello were also in their first seasons with Las Vegas. Cregg, 51, spent the previous two seasons as the assistant offensive line coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Scangarello, 52, worked as the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos in 2019 and most recently was offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky in 2022 before landing with the Raiders. 

The Raiders, prepping for their bye week, also replaced starting quarterback Gardner Minshew with Desmond Ridder late in the third quarter against the Bengals.
