arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at Birley Academy in Sheffield has sent shockwaves through the community. The incident, which took place on school grounds, has left many residents questioning the safety and security of their children while at school.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk in unexpected places, even within the walls of an educational institution. It is a sobering reality that violence can strike anywhere, at any time, and it is imperative that measures be taken to ensure the protection and well-being of students and staff alike.
The school was put into lockdown following the attack and pupils described having to hide under desks.
South Yorkshire Police said the boy remained in custody.
Speaking outside the school on Wednesday afternoon Assistant Chief Constable Dan Thorpe said officers were called to the scene at about 08:50 BST.
"The two adults suffered minor injuries, one from a sharp object which is believed to be broken glass," he said.
In a statement given outside the school, Assistant Chief Constable Dan Thorpe said one of the adult victims was hurt with what is thought to be "broken glass" while the child who was assaulted "thankfully had no visible injuries."
Mr Thorpe said it was a "frightening ordeal for everyone" but praised school staff for their actions which "helped keep the school community safe".
He added: "Birley is a tight-knit community and while the events concluded in a swift arrest it will no doubt cause on-going concern.
Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the NAHT school leaders’ union, said: “The reports coming out of Sheffield are shocking and very upsetting.
“Our thoughts are with everyone in the Birley school community.
“It would not be appropriate for us to comment further until further details about what has taken place are established by the appropriate authorities.”
South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Billings said: "Whilst this type of incident is rare it has been extremely concerning for all those involved and the wider school community.
"I have been fully briefed by the chief constable and I would like to thank the police and the school for their swift response. The community can be reassured that police were able to make an arrest at the scene and an individual is in custody."
Birley Academy is a secondary school in the southeast of Sheffield, with around 1,100 pupils.
