The Toronto Maple Leafs secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins in a nail-biting NHL playoff game. The atmosphere was electric as fans packed the arena, eagerly anticipating the clash between these two fierce rivals. The tension was palpable as both teams fought tooth and nail for every inch of ice, showcasing their skill and determination.
The Maple Leafs struck first with a goal early in the first period, sending their supporters into a frenzy. However, the Bruins quickly responded with a goal of their own, setting up a tense battle for supremacy. In the end, it was Toronto who emerged victorious, scoring a crucial goal late in the third period to seal the win.
Jake McCabe added a goal and Joseph Woll finished with 28 saves to help Toronto cut Boston’s lead in the series to 3-2. Game 6 is set for Thursday in Toronto.
Knies said Tavares' ability to fight off Bruins defenders and keep the puck alive in front of the net put him in the spot to put the game away.
“I kind of just found my stick and was fortunate to bury that one and send us back home," Knies said.
Max Domi, Mitch Marner had assists for the Maple Leafs, who outshot the Bruins 33-28.
The Maple Leafs were without center Auston Matthews, the NHL goals leader in the regular season with 69, who missed the third period of Toronto’s 3-1 loss in Game 4 because of an illness. There was no update on him after the game.
The Maple Leafs outshot the Bruins 11-2 in the first period, but the game was tied 1-1 entering the second.
McCabe gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead at 5:33 of the first, shooting through traffic from the point.
“They get a goal decently early off the face-off after I lost it,” Frederic said. “That gives them momentum. Anytime you get the first goal, it helps.”
Marchand then had a terrific chance after sitting a long time in the box, but could only scoop his effort wide. The Bruins forward and Pontus Holmberg were handed offsetting minors and Boston's Charlie Coyle rattled Woll's right post on a shot with the teams playing 4-on-4.
The Toronto goaltender then robbed Frederic in tight with 7:27 to play before Swayman stopped Tyler Bertuzzi on a 2 on-1 with Domi.
