Inter Miami CF faced off against Nashville SC in a highly anticipated MLS match. The energy was palpable as both teams took to the field, eager to secure a victory. From the opening whistle, it was clear that Inter Miami meant business as they dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities.
Their efforts paid off in the 25th minute when Gonzalo Higuain found the back of the net with a powerful strike. Nashville SC fought back valiantly, but Inter Miami's defense held strong, thwarting their attacks at every turn.
Nashville took the lead in the second minute but Lionel Messi scored twice and added an assist as Inter Miami rallied from conceding an own goal to defeat Nashville, 3-1, Saturday night at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The loss was the second straight for Nashville (1-3-4, seven points) and fourth straight game without a win.
Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets on a corner kick to put the Herons ahead for good just before halftime. He then sealed the game with a penalty kick in the 81st minute, his fifth goal in as many games against NSC.
Gómez could become the club's latest high-profile injury, following fellow U22 Initiative signings Federico Redondo and Facundo Farías – the latter out for the season.
Messi – who opened and closed the scoring for Miami with a brace – is also just weeks removed from a hamstring injury.
Now Gómez's short-term status is up in the air, and possibly his availability for Paraguay at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
Miami (5-2-3, 21 points) is unbeaten in five matches against Nashville since Messi’s arrival. Miami also remained in first place in the Eastern Conference
The scoreline then held throughout the final minutes of the first half and the majority of the second 45 minutes presented an even matchup, but there was more to come from the hosts. In the 80th minute substitute Leo Afonso was brought down inside the box and a penalty was called for Inter Miami. Messi then calmly slotted the ball to the back of the net in the 81st minute to give Inter Miami a 3-1 lead and register his seventh goal this regular season and ninth across all competitions in 2024 to become the team’s top scorer.
Miami was already without injured Argentina youth international midfielder Federico Redondo and has lost forward Facundo Farias for the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
