PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll returned to game action on Thursday evening, playing a rehab game in the Arizona Complex League.
That was not the plan coming into Thursday, but he asked for the opportunity to get back out there.
Carroll was hitting in the batting cages at Chase Field and “lighting it up,” manager Torey Lovullo described. After a brief conversation with training staff, Carroll went up to Lovullo and asked if he could play in a complex league game.
Shortly after, Carroll started in right field and received four plate appearances at Salt River Fields. He went 0-for-2 with a couple walks.

“That’s how fast it happened,” Lovullo said. “So we’re not gonna hold Corbin back. This is a pain threshold thing. … He had four at-bats, two walks, played seven innings, everything’s good.”
Carroll went on the 10-day injured list on June 24 with a fractured left wrist. He started taking dry swings this week, then hitting in the cages while diligently working on other elements of his game to remain sharp.
Lovullo said during Thursday’s pregame press conference that Carroll was trending toward facing reliever Kendall Graveman in a live batting practice session on Friday, and that remains the plan.
“I’m gonna strongly discourage him from playing a doubleheader,” Lovullo said. “One game and the live BP on back-to-back days might be enough for me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Corbin came into my office and said that’s what he wants to do. That’s his mindset.”
Carroll set a goal to return before the All-Star break on July 14. He last played on June 18, and the D-backs are 7-7 since he was hit in the hand by a pitch.
Lovullo said he’d be surprised if Carroll came off the injured list this weekend against the Kansas City Royals, but he did not rule it out, either.
