Man sets himself on fire outside courthouse

In this tragic display of desperation, the man sought to draw attention to perceived injustices or grievances that he felt were not being addressed through conventional means. His extreme actions served as a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to in order to be heard and make a statement.

CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC were all on the air with reporters talking about the seating of a jury when the incident happened and other news agencies, including The Associated Press, were livestreaming from outside the courthouse. The man, who distributed pamphlets before dousing himself in an accelerant and setting himself on fire, was in critical condition.

The man, Maxwell Azzarello, was badly burned and taken to a hospital in critical condition, officials said.

There was already a heavy NYPD presence already outside the building due to the high-profile nature of the trial, and officers rushed to get what appeared to be a fire extinguisher to douse the flames, while others tried to use jackets to cover the fire. Their first attempt to put out the blaze was unsuccessful, and video appeared to show the man trying to sit up as onlookers shrieked in shock.

The fire was ultimately put out minutes later after police and FDNY brought a larger extinguisher, leaving a smoky scene outside court as a gaggle of reporters and horrified witnesses looked on.

The jury includes a sales professional, a software engineer, an English teacher and multiple lawyers.

Lawyers for the prosecution and defence have spent days questioning hundreds of New Yorkers to determine whether they can serve on the jury with impartiality and fairness. Dozens of potential jurors were dismissed after saying they did not believe they could meet that standard.

Investigators are still interviewing witnesses and said he didn't appear to say anything before setting fire to himself.

Three NYPD officers and one court officer had minor injuries after helping to extinguish the blaze.

Officials said they will now reassess security outside the court.
