Dodgers and the San Diego Padres is one that has spanned decades and captivated baseball fans across the country. Both teams have a rich history of success, with multiple World Series championships between them. The intensity of their matchups is palpable, as each game is a battle for supremacy in the National League West.
The Dodgers, with their star-studded lineup and deep pitching rotation, have long been considered one of the top teams in baseball. Meanwhile, the Padres have built a young and talented roster that has quickly become a force to be reckoned with.
Jackson Merrill hit the go-ahead single in the 11th inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. homered and had three hits, and the San Diego Padres rallied for an 8-7 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night despite Shohei Ohtani hitting his 175th home run in the majors.
Manny Machado, Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Cronenworth also went deep for the Padres, who trailed 7-3 after three innings.
In the 11th inning Jackson Merrill lined an 0-2 pitch into the left field to score Jose Azocar to beat LA 8-7 and give the Padres their first extra-innings win of 2024, something that took them about five months to accomplish in 2023.
Manny Machado got the scoring started with a 2-run home run in the 1st inning off Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the first runs the $325 million man has allowed since his first start of the year when he gave up five runs in his only inning of work against the Padres in Korea. Little did we know that blast would light the fuse on a night of offensive glottony.
Shohei Ohtani in the bottom of the first to make it a 2-1 ballgame, and after the Kim home run in the top of the second, King had a rough second inning. Max Muncy led off the inning with a line drive home run to right field to make the score 3-2, and after a walk between two outs, Gavin Lux rolled over a ground ball to second base that kicked off the heel of Xander Bogaerts’ glove.
Robert Suarez would return to the mound in the bottom of the eleventh, and would retire the first two batters on a popout and groundout to first base. With two outs and a runner 90 feet away, Mookie Betts stepped up to the plate and hit a fly ball to center field, which landed in the glove of Merrill to end the game with a final score of 8-7 Padres.
The Padres look to keep the bats going tomorrow night in Los Angeles. Game time is set for 6:10 pm Pacific time, with Matt Waldron on the mound for San Diego.
