Historic North Shore lodge destroyed in overnight fire for 3rd time in 75 years

The historic North Shore Lodge, a beloved landmark nestled in the heart of a quaint coastal town, has tragically fallen victim to an overnight fire for the third time in its 75-year existence. This devastating incident has left the community in shock and mourning as they grapple with the loss of this cherished piece of their history.

Built in 1946, the lodge quickly became a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. Its rustic charm, picturesque views of the nearby ocean, and warm hospitality made it an iconic destination. However, fate seemed determined to test its resilience. In 1962, a fierce storm ravaged the lodge, reducing it to ashes. Despite this setback, the community rallied together and rebuilt their beloved landmark from scratch.

Lutsen Resort. Staff from Lutsen Resort reported smoke coming from the floor in the lobby area.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said the building was completely engulfed. There were no guests on-site, and no injuries were reported.

WTIP’s Kirsten Wisniewski was on-site at Lutsen Resort this morning and spoke with Lutsen Fire Chief Steve Duclos.

Duclos said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, and the State Fire Marshall will investigate the incident. As of 9:30 a.m., the Fire Marshalls have arrived and are assessing the scene.

The lodge posted on its Facebook page Tuesday morning of the blaze, writing, "The Historic Lutsen Lodge has been taken by a devastating fire this evening…. A total loss to the lodge building…. Fires in 1949, 1951 and 2024. The amazing memories made here are in our hearts as we begin the heavy weighted process to rebuild back better."

Vanegas, the general manager, said he got a call about the fire around 12:30 a.m. and made it to the property by about 1 a.m. He saw fire burning in the windows of the historic lodge.

“Once the windows blew out, and the oxygen and the air got into the lobby, that was the beginning of the end. It exploded so fast in terms of fire, we knew that it could not be saved,” he said.

Crews from eight fire departments battled the fire. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

On Vanegas' to-do list is to call - not email or text, but call - every guest who had reservations to stay at Lutsen Lodge, tell them what happened and work to help with alternative plans to keep vacations on track. He says owner Bryce Campbell still has the plans from the 1951 rebuild, and will work to create a new lodge with the look of the beloved old structure, but with updated mechanicals.

Lutsen Resort claims to be Minnesota's oldest resort, dating back to 1885. It is a popular destination for hikers, skiers and people who love to soak in the majesty of the North Shore.

Their Facebook page says Tuesday's fire is the third in Lutsen Resort history, with the lodge also burning in 1949 and 1951
