WBC super middleweight interim titlist David Benavidez demolished two-division champ Demetrius Andrade on Saturday night at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, and now a potential fight against 168-pound undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez could be in his future.
Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs), 26, took over the fight after Round 3 and teed off on Andrade, who went down in Round 4. He has won eight of his past 10 fights by stoppage. Benavidez has been looking for a mega fight against Alvarez, and the win on Saturday puts him a step closer.
Liam Williams in 2021. He's been inactive as of late, with this fight being only his second in the past two years.
Fresh off a resounding decision win over former champion Caleb Plant in their March PPV clash, the 26-year-old Benavidez, who was born in Arizona to parents of Mexican and Ecuadorian descent, has seemingly been hand-picked by boxing's foundational Mexican-American fan base as the eventual successor to Alvarez.
Benavidez, like Andrade, is hoping a breakthrough victory against such a tricky opponent will be the final rung on the ladder that needs to be climbed before finally getting the call to challenge Alvarez for his four-pack of world titles in the division.
Benavidez started slow and giving his opponent an advantage. But as soon as he finished analyzing him and began to press the accelerator, he cornered his rival and with powerful punches forced Andrade's corner to stop the actions as soon as the sixth round ended.
Meanwhile, Jermall Charlo scored a wide unanimous decision (98-92, 99-91 and 100-90) over Jose Benavidez Jr. after a two-year absence from the ring.
Benavidez no room to work and although he assured that his power did not show up tonight, he will return to fight three to four fights in 2024, no matter what division he limits himself to.
The other fight of note on Saturday marks the return of WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo when he takes on Jose Benavidez Jr., the older brother of David Benavidez. Charlo has been out of action since June 2021 as he has dealt with out-of-ring issues with his family and his own mental health. Now, he looks to knock off the ring rust when he takes on Benavidez Jr. in a 10-round non-title bout. Benavidez Jr. picked up his first win in five years in August.
