New York Jets had lost that he started removing the tape from his banged-up hand in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.
And he wasn't the only one.
"Sitting on that sideline at the end of that game, feeling like we were going to lose, it was a pretty s---ty feeling," Jets tight end Tyler Conklin said later at his locker.
Only 24 seconds away from one of their worst defeats in years, the Jets staged an improbable rally to beat the New York Giants 13-10 for their third straight win, tying the score on Greg Zuerlein's 35-yard field goal as regulation expired and winning it on Zuerlein's 33-yarder in overtime.
Just like that, the Jets went from potential laughingstock to local royalty after a historically bad offensive game Sunday at Metlife Stadium.
Tyrod Taylor once again started at quarterback in place of Daniel Jones, who missed his third consecutive game due to a neck injury. Jones has taken scout team reps in practice but still awaits clearance for contact.
The quarterback situation took another turn when Taylor left midway through second quarter with a ribs injury and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Tommy DeVito, an undrafted rookie who has been the third quarterback since the spring, relieved him.
Malik Taylor, a practice squad call up, drew a 30-yard pass interference penalty. Zuerlein ended one of the wildest games in the Metropolitan rivalry the next play.
"Playing great defense, all that stuff, that's sustainable," Saleh said. "Making mistakes, penalties, turnovers, not sustainable. The good news is that we can correct it on a W, but there's a lot of things we have to clean up for sure."
After Gano's second miss, the Jets drove 58 yards in four plays without a timeout in the final 24 seconds for the tying field goal.
Wilson hit Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard on consecutive 29-yard passes, allowing the Jets to spike the ball and stop the clock with 1 second to play to give Zuerlein a chance to tie.
The Giants will be in Las Vegas next weekend and they'll be hoping that one of their veteran quarterbacks will get the green light to lead the offense.
