Georgia Win Over Florida Gators

Sport by : (PRESSBEE) -

Georgia will be trying to extend the nation's longest winning streak to 25 games Saturday when it faces rival Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, in the SEC on CBS Game of the Week. The Bulldogs have won back-to-back meetings and five of the last six over the Gators in this storied rivalry.

The Bulldogs won a sloppy 37-20 affair over Vanderbilt two weeks ago in Nashville in a game that saw tight end Brock Bowers suffer an ankle injury that will keep him out of Saturday's game. Last week's bye gave coach Kirby Smart and the offensive staff some extra time to develop a plan without its superstar in the lineup.

Graham Mertz played the game of his life in a thrilling 41-39 win over South Carolina two weeks ago. The fifth-year junior threw for 423 yards and three touchdowns on the night, including a game-winning 21-yard strike to Ricky Pearsall with 47 seconds left in the game.

The play — Trevor Etienne’s stuffed run — itself wasn’t the reason why Florida (5-2, 3-2 SEC) lost to its rival up north for the third consecutive time. But there was no coming back from it. Not against these Bulldogs (8-0, 5-0), who might not be as good as they were in their back-to-back national title runs but remain heads, shoulders, knees and toes above the Gators.

Georgia linebacker Smael Mondon finished the day with five tackles and two tackles for the loss against the Gators

Credit to Georgia. They beat us today. I do think that this group will respond the right way. I think ultimately, as a staff and as a team, being a man and taking ownership of things that you can do better.

And I think ultimately we can compromise our character, or we can choose character, and we can go about our business here. And there's no sympathy.

Ladd McConkey had six receptions for 135 yards and a score, helping fill the void left by injured star Brock Bowers (ankle).

Florida’s Mertz ran for a touchdown late and threw for 230 yards and two scores, including a 25-yarder to Tre Wilson on the opening drive. It was the first time the Gators have scored first in the series since 2015. But they managed just a yard on their next 18 plays, which included two turnovers and four sacks.
