Dianne Feinstein was a pioneering American and a true trailblazer.  In San Francisco, she showed enormous poise and courage in the wake of tragedy, and became a powerful voice for American values.  In the United States Senate, she turned passion into purpose, and led the fight to ban assault weapons, also making her mark on everything from national security to the environment to protecting civil liberties.  Senator Feinstein was a role model for so many Americans and she had an immense impact on younger female leaders for whom she generously opened doors.  She was a historic figure, and our country will benefit from her legacy for generations.
As California’s political class on Friday mourns the death of Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, it is also privately buzzing about what happens to her now-vacant Senate seat.
Dianne Feinstein had already announced she would not run for re-election in 2024, triggering a competitive election to select a successor. Now, her death will force Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint a replacement to serve out the remainder of the term — a politically fraught decision he has been dreading having to make.
An appointment could upend California’s blockbuster Senate primary, which pits high-profile Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee against each other ahead of an all-party primary in March.
With more than a year left in Feinstein’s term, Gov. Gavin Newsom must now appoint a replacement, a possibility he dismissed only weeks ago as a hypothetical — and a fraught prospect as a race to succeed Feinstein has already been underway for months.
A spokesperson for the governor said this morning that his office had no information yet about Newsom’s plans, or a timeline for his selection. In a statement, he praised Feinstein, a fellow Democrat, as “a leader in times of tragedy and chaos.”
“She was a political giant, whose tenacity was matched by her grace,” Newsom said. “She broke down barriers and glass ceilings, but never lost her belief in the spirit of political cooperation.”
Biden, who served alongside Feinstein in the Senate for more than 15 years, paid tribute to his former colleague in remarks at an event at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Va.
"She was a historic figure, a trailblazer for women, and a great friend. Dianne made her mark on everything from national security to the environment, to gun safety, to protecting civil liberties. The country will miss her dearly, and so will Jill and I," he said.
Earlier this year, Feinstein had faced calls to resign amid worrying signs about her memory. She resisted those calls, but also said she would not seek reelection in 2024.
