New York Jets signed veteran free agent Trevor Siemian to their practice squad, the team announced.
Siemian, 31, was released by the Cincinnati Bengals in the preseason and joins Zach Wilson and Tim Boyle in the Jets' quarterback room. The move comes two days after another poor performance by Wilson, who nevertheless received a vote of confidence from coach Robert Saleh.
Wilson will start Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, Saleh said, but Siemian gives the Jets a quarterback with starting experience -- a potential option if Wilson continues to struggle.
Trevor Siemian previously played for the Jets in 2019 under then-head coach Adam Gase. The QB made one start for Gang Green that season when Sam Darnold infamously contracted mononucleosis. Siemian completed 3-of-6 passing for three yards that night before leaving with an ankle injury that would ultimately end his season.
Since then, Siemian has bounced around with stints on the Tennessee Titans practice squad in 2020 and made four starts for the New Orleans Saints in 2021. The veteran spent 2022 as the Chicago Bears' backup. He started one game last season, coincidently against New York, in which he completed 14 of 25 passes for 179 yards, a TD, an INT, and took two sacks in a 31-10 loss to the Mike White-led Jets
Siemian most recently spent training camp and the preseason with the Bengals, but didn’t make their roster. He has also been with the Bears, Saints, Titans, Vikings and Broncos.
NFL career, Siemian has started 30 games and gone 13-17 as a starter, throwing 42 touchdown passes and 28 interceptions. He joins Wilson and Tim Boyle on the Jets’ quarterback depth chart.
A seventh-round pick of the Broncos in 2015, Siemian, a Northwestern product, played his first three seasons in Denver. He had a 13-11 mark as a starter in 2016-17, totaling 30 TDs and 24 INTs. This will be Siemian's second stint with the Green & White as he was signed in 2019 to back up Sam Darnold but sustained a season-ending ankle injury in w Week 2 game vs. the Browns on Monday Night Football.
After being injured most of the next season with the Jets, Siemian had stints with Tennessee, New Orleans, Chicago and was among Cincinnati’s cuts after training camp this summer. He started one game for the Bears last season — against the Jets in place of an injured Justin Fields. Siemian was 14 of 25 for 179 yards and a touchdown with an interception in Chicago’s 31-10 loss.
