Premier League, Newcastle vs Liverpool 1-2

Sport by : (PRESSBEE) -

Liverpool a late 2-1 win at Newcastle United as their unbeaten start to the season continued in the Premier League.

Newcastle were dominant following Anthony Gordon's 25th-minute opener — capitalising on a mistake by Trent Alexander-Arnold — and the dismissal of Reds centre-back Virgil van Dijk for fouling Alexander Isak as the last defender in the 28th minute.

Since arriving in a club-record transfer from Benfica in the summer of 2022 in a deal that could eventually cost Liverpool £85 million, Núñez has blown hot and cold. He has shown glimpses of world-class ability, but more often than not, those brief flashes have been overshadowed by poor finishing, erratic decision-making and a short fuse that opponents have triggered to distract his focus and render him close to a liability at times.

Núñez. He is a rough diamond that will require time to be polished into the finished article, yet his ability to frustrate fans, teammates and Klopp alike has seen the 24-year-old go into this season with doubts over whether he can be the real deal for Liverpool.

Two crucial goals at St. James' Park, which secured a 2-1 win for Liverpool despite being reduced to ten players by a 28th-minute red card for captain Virgil van Dijk, will not banish those doubts for good, but the ruthless manner in which Núñez took his chances will have come as a huge relief to Klopp because his team needs Núñez to come good more than ever this season.

Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool didn’t think they could win, necessarily, but knew they’d get chances, that Newcastle would tire too, and if you stick together you can make stuff happen. he reserves particular praise for Jerrell Quansah, then asked about the red card that wasn’t, agrees he was unlucky to be booked to begin with, and doesn’t say much about the card he swerved. The team will be very proud of the win and will look back on it with pride in years to come.

Klopp has beaten Howe more times (12) in top-flight league games than he has any other manager in his career, and with this win he set a Premier League record for the most consecutive wins one manager has against a specific opponent, having beaten Howe in 11 consecutive matches.

It was a crazy result on a crazy afternoon at St. James’ Park, and one that will give Liverpool real hope that their new-look team can mount a title challenge this season.
